Are there people still alive from when Jesus was on earth?

Many have asked this question, especially after seeing the book of John 21:21-23

John 21:21-23

King James Version (KJV)

21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?

22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?

Looking also at the book of Mark 9:1

Mark 9:1

King James Version (KJV)

9 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

Does this mean that there are some people are still alive from the time Jesus Christ was on earth? Does it mean that some people will not die until Jesus comes back again?

Explanation

Taking these two verses, one at a time:

JOHN 21:23

King James Version (KJV)

23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said NOT unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?

The Bible here says, Jesus did not tell him that he shall not die, but from another translation,

John 21:22-23

The Message (MSG)

22-23 Jesus said, “If I want him to live until I come again, what’s that to you? You—follow me.” That is how the rumor got out among the brothers that this disciple wouldn’t die. But that is not what Jesus said. He simply said, “If I want him to live until I come again, what’s that to you?”

Then the second reference from the gospel of Mark is usually also misquoted as saying some will not die till the Kingdom of God comes (signifying the second coming of Jesus Christ). This is not so. The kingdom of God coming with power is also promised in Acts of the Apostles.

Acts 1:8

King James Version (KJV)

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

The kingdom of God coming with power actually meant the manifestation of Pentecost. It was finally revealed in the next two chapters. Read it here (courtesy of Bible Gateway)

It is important that we fully understand the scripture, so that we are not misled.

May God expand our knowledge of Him, as we continually search the scripture.

Amen
